A Data Type of Intrinsically Plane Graphs in Agda altenmuller-2026-a

This work develops a suitable data type for plane graph embeddings in Agda. Graphs are used as combinatorial representations for string diagrams, a graphical calculus for monoidal categories. Whenever a monoidal theory does not include any symmetry or braiding operations, it describes processes that are sensitive to their topology. To encode this information in the graphical language, we have to consider surface-embeddings of graphs. We study the simplest case, plane graphs, and present their implementation in Agda. We overcome issues like the cyclic nature of a graph by using one of its spanning trees as an underlying inductive structure. The graphs we implement are plane by construction and any operation on them is guaranteed to preserve this planarity. Additionally, we present a notion of focussing on a certain subgraph within a graph. This operation is crucial for the application of local rewrite rules which themselves are at the centre of diagrammatic reasoning in monoidal categories.

The Rezk Completion for Elementary Topoi wullaert-2026-the

The development of category theory in univalent foundations and the formalization thereof is an active field of research. Categories in that setting are often assumed to be univalent which means that identities and isomorphisms of objects coincide. One consequence hereof is that equivalences and identities coincide for univalent categories and that structure on univalent categories transfers along equivalences. However, constructions such as the Kleisli category, the Karoubi envelope, and the tripos-to-topos construction, do not necessarily give univalent categories. To deal with that problem, one uses the Rezk completion, which completes a category into a univalent one. However, to use the Rezk completion when considering categories with structure, one also needs to show that the Rezk completion inherits the structure from the original category. In this work, we present a modular framework for lifting the Rezk completion from categories to categories with structure. We demonstrate the modularity of our framework by lifting the Rezk completion from categories to elementary topoi in manageable steps.

mitten: A Flexible Multimodal Proof Assistant stassen-2023-mitten

Recently, there has been a growing interest in type theories which include modalities, unary type constructors which need not commute with substitution. Here we focus on MTT [Daniel Gratzer et al., 2021], a general modal type theory which can internalize arbitrary collections of (dependent) right adjoints [Birkedal et al., 2020]. These modalities are specified by mode theories [Licata and Shulman, 2016], 2-categories whose objects corresponds to modes, morphisms to modalities, and 2-cells to natural transformations between modalities. We contribute a defunctionalized NbE algorithm which reduces the type-checking problem for MTT to deciding the word problem for the mode theory. The algorithm is restricted to the class of preordered mode theories - mode theories with at most one 2-cell between any pair of modalities. Crucially, the normalization algorithm does not depend on the particulars of the mode theory and can be applied without change to any preordered collection of modalities. Furthermore, we specify a bidirectional syntax for MTT together with a type-checking algorithm. We further contribute mitten, a flexible experimental proof assistant implementing these algorithms which supports all decidable preordered mode theories without alteration.

A Machine-Checked Proof of Birkhoff’s Variety Theorem in Martin-Löf Type Theory demeo-2022-a

The Agda Universal Algebra Library is a project aimed at formalizing the foundations of universal algebra, equational logic and model theory in dependent type theory using Agda. In this paper we draw from many components of the library to present a self-contained, formal, constructive proof of Birkhoff’s HSP theorem in Martin-Löf dependent type theory. This achieves one of the project’s initial goals: to demonstrate the expressive power of inductive and dependent types for representing and reasoning about general algebraic and relational structures by using them to formalize a significant theorem in the field.

Quantitative Polynomial Functors nakov_quantitative_2022

We investigate containers and polynomial functors in Quantitative Type Theory, and give initial algebra semantics of inductive data types in the presence of linearity. We show that reasoning by induction is supported, and equivalent to initiality, also in the linear setting.

Wellfounded Trees and Dependent Polynomial Functors gambino_wellfounded_2004

We set out to study the consequences of the assumption of types of wellfounded trees in dependent type theories. We do so by investigating the categorical notion of wellfounded tree introduced in [16]. Our main result shows that wellfounded trees allow us to define initial algebras for a wide class of endofunctors on locally cartesian closed categories.
